New Sloveniakia's origin lies in the region of Gigaverse (http://www.nationstates.net/region=gigaverse). At one point in time, the founder of that region, the Confederal Star System of Gigaverse, decided to launch puppet regions representing various branches of the international armed forces of the region. New Dolgaria (http://www.nationstates.net/nation=new_dolgaria), a democratic republic with a center-left, moderate liberal governing party and a relatively new member of the region, decided to assist by establishing the Utopian Air Force region ("Utopian" was being used for all the puppets for obscure reasons). So the puppet state of New Sloveniakia was established, named so because of its large population of Slovaks and Slovenes, to control the Utopian Air Force. The nation of Gigaverse created three accompanying puppet states, each named after a contemporary fighter jet.
When creating the new puppet, New Dolgaria hit a snag: who would live there? Would it be just the region's air forces, or would citizens live there too? Certainly, having an actual country rather than simply a military base, would be the moral and practical choice, and New Dolgaria, being a moral and practical country, asked for volunteers to populate the new state. A group of radical citizens, unsatisfied with New Dolgaria's moderate liberal policies and its alleged petite bourgeois attidude towards social justice, gladly volunteered to emigrate. Although the singe largest groups of these radicals were Slovaks and Slovenes, the group as a whole was diverse ethnically, racially, culturally, religiously, etc. They all shared one thing in common: far-left radicalism.
The Utopian Air Force was doomed from the start: it had no specific purpose other than as a place to keep the region of Gigaverse's cooperating air forces. This lack of purpose meant that the way things were run in New Sloveniakia was open to interpretation. The radical population began pushing for radicalism in matters other than military ones. Eventually, a reluctant New Dolgaria, which was still technically in control of New Sloveniakia, granted this wish. The government of New Sloveniakia became a jumble of various leftist ideologies, with no dominating ideology. The only leftist groups not represented were the "anti-revisionist" groups: Stalinism, Maoism, Hoxhaism (the ideology of Communist Albania), and Juche (the ideology of North Korea).
The first (and only) action of the Utopian Air Force was to attack a fleet of Maoist ships en route to the distant island of Peasantonia (not a NS member, I just made this up). Air Force radar had detected the fleet, which consisted entirely of warships, some 500 miles off the coast of New Sloveniakia. Upon visually identifying them as belonging to some obscure Maoist country (also not an NS member), the UAF considered what to do. It seemed that the Maoists must be trying to take possession of Peasantonia. Peasantonia is a small but fairly populated island, isolated from the rest of the world, with various tribal governments. As a result, neither New Sloveniakia nor New Dolgaria had any relations with Peasantonia, but intelligence indicated that the island was relatively peaceful and harmless. Allowing another country to conquer Peasantonia seemed beneath the Dolgarians and Sloveniakians. In addition, New Dolgaria strongly opposed violent ideologies such as Maoism and felt responsible for protecting the natives of Peasantonia from oppression and even possible massacres. Most New Sloveniakians, as has been said, also opposed Maoism, but the opposition was much weaker than that of New Dolgaria. This reflected tensions and disagreements between the various leftists, with some of them even considering that the UAF should support the Maoists. Regardless of the internal conflict, the UAF resolved to attack the Maoist fleet. The three other nations in the UAF, which, unlike New Sloveniakia, were almost entirely military in nature and not countries in the practical sense, executed most of the attack. The operation was a complete success; most of the fleet was sunk while the rest headed home in a hurry. The UAF jets returned with minimal damage and no casualties. The Utopian Air Force had completed its first mission.
After that, things went downhill fast. Although some time had passed since New Dolgaria and Gigaverse had established the region, only one occassion had arisen to make use of it. The three unpopulated neighbor nations to New Sloveniakia grew restless, eventually ceasing to exist as Gigaverse pulled its forces back. While this was happening, turmoil erupted in New Sloveniakia. A minority of the population had disagreed with the decision to attack the Maoists, whom they regarded as fellow travelers. These people, who were mostly Leninists with weak, sometimes no, opposition to anti-revisionism, began to clash with the mainstream. In addition, New Sloveniakians were becoming increasingly resentful of the fact that their nation was technically under New Dolgaria's control. The situation became so unstable that New Dolgaria removed most of its forces back to the mainland, effectively ending the Utopian Air Force. Finally, a three-day negotiation session between the leaders of New Sloveniakia's leftist community and New Dolgarian military and political officials resulted in a somewhat calmer mood for the country. New Sloveniakia would become fully independent from New Dolgaria, but cooperative relations between the two countries would continue. New Dolgaria would provide New Sloveniakia with a suitably sized military, in return for which New Sloveniakia would guarantee basic human rights for all its citizens.
Although independence cheered the country greatly, it did not unite it. Fighting between the anti-revisionist Leninists and the anti-Stalinist majority grew worse. At first, it looked as if the government, which was decidedly anti-Stalinist, would have to use considerable force to put down the anti-revisionists, but the already small support for that faction dwindled after several well-publicized murders committed by anti-revisionist terrorists. The remaining people who were sympathetic to Stalinism and its ideological descendents were expelled from the country a few months after independence.
Ironically, the end of one major civil conflict led to the beginning of another. Until now, the various anti-Stalinist leftists had been united; now that the threat of anti-revisionism was eliminated, the various factions began to quarrel about the government. Since the day that New Dolgaria had granted New Sloveniakia a leftist government with limited powers, the New Sloveniakian government had consisted of a unicameral parliament, a president, and several military advisors, who were all subordinate to the New Dolgarian government and military. This structure continued, but after independence, some people wondered if a different government, that of a free people and not of those enslaved by imperialism, should be established. Some groups favored a strong government, free from restrictions to implement socialism. Others insisted that democracy be protected.
From the beginning, a large part of New Sloveniakia's populace had been Trotskyist. The free elections, monitored by New Dolgaria, had put many Trotskyists into the government. As a result, after the expulsion of the anti-revisionists, the Trotskyists were able to overpower the other groups in the government. Although Trotskyist citizens held varying opinions on the authoritarian/democratic issue, the Trotskyists in government leaned heavily toward authoritarianism. They believed that the only way for New Sloveniakia to move forward would be to establish a one-party state. Repressive measures were soon passed. The other leftist groups, such as Luxemburgists and anrcho-communists, became marginalized and could no longer criticize Trotskyism openly. (to be continued...)
